I started this piece by forming and building black and white clay carefully mounted on a cradled birch panel.  I then transferred one of John Tenniel's illustrations.  Next came the embellishments and some artistic license with india inks, alcohol inks and other paints.  This image is from Chapter V of "Through the Looking Glass", "Wool and Water" p. 122.   The scene is taken from one of the great John Tenniel's illustrations. (By John Tenniel - Lewis Carroll (1907) Through the looking glass and what Alice found there, Category:New York: Macmillan, pp. 102 Retrieved from Internet Archive: link, digitized by MSN, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=9110042)  The whole piece is securely mounted on a Birch cradled panel and well sealed with archival materials.

"The shop seemed to be full of all manner of curious things——but the oddest part of it all was, that whenever she looked hard at any shelf, to make out exactly what it had on it, that particular shelf was always quite empty: though the others round it were crowded as full as they could hold." (Chapter V)

The clay gives it a really nice structure, texture and lots of whimsy!  This was so much fun to do! I hope you enjoy it.

The panel measures 5 " x 5 " x  1" but with the clay it is slightly larger and about 1 1/4 inches thick.  Since the panel is cradled it is ready to hang right on the wall.  I initialed the bottom corner of the painting and it will be stamped and signed on the back.

I do not have a formula for these creations.  I start with a mood and let the creation take shape. The process makes each piece truly unique and one of a kind. Baked in many stages and finished with a sealant.  All materials are archival, professional grade.  Durable and resilient  and easy to clean if necessary!

I have been working in a new medium and I am loving the colors and textures.

Made with polymer clay and painted and embellished with many different mediums including pastels, paint, alcohol inks and markers.

Colors may appear differently depending on your monitor settings.

This is an art object, not meant to be a children's toy.
